About Kalpeni Island

Kalpeni sits in the southern group of Lakshadweep and is known for its large, shallow lagoon enclosed by a storm bank of coral rubble – the result of a historic cyclone – and for the uninhabited islets of Tilakkam, Pitti and Cheriyam on its rim. The water is exceptionally calm and clear, which makes it a good place for snorkelling, kayaking and simply wading over the reef flats. Because Kalpeni is not on the flight network, it is reached by ship.

How this cruise works

This is a ship-based weekend itinerary operated on the passenger vessels run by the Lakshadweep Administration between the mainland (Kochi, and at times Beypore/Kozhikode) and the islands. You sail out overnight, spend a full day at Kalpeni with a guided island tour and water activities, and sail back. Accommodation and meals during the voyage are on board in the booked class.

Typical activities on the island day

• Guided walk through Kalpeni village and the lagoon-side viewpoints.
• Snorkelling over the coral rubble bank and reef flats.
• Kayaking and pedal-boat time in the sheltered lagoon.
• Boat transfer to a nearby islet, conditions permitting.

Important notes for ship travel

• Ship schedules are set by the Lakshadweep Administration and can change or be cancelled at short notice for weather or operational reasons; build buffer days into your plan.
• A Lakshadweep entry permit is required before ship tickets can be issued. For Tourist-category applications a local sponsor is no longer required and a PCC is no longer required to be uploaded – we handle the permit with your Aadhaar and a recent photo. Foreign nationals should contact us first.
• Part of the package cost is paid at booking and the balance is due around twenty days before departure.
• Onboard food during the voyage may be paid directly on the ship depending on the vessel and class.
• Alcohol is prohibited throughout Lakshadweep.
